Gemini is Now Free in Chrome: Here’s What It Can Do for You
Google has announced that Gemini, its intelligent assistant previously reserved for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, is now freely available to all Chrome desktop users in the United States, provided the browser language is set to English. According to Google, users will see a new “spark” icon in the upper-right corner of Chrome, and a single click summons Gemini for direct interaction and command input.
The update brings Gemini into deeper integration with Chrome, allowing it to organise and compare information across multiple tabs and introducing a Recall feature for browsing history. It can also be woven into Google’s broader ecosystem, with capabilities to schedule meetings in Google Calendar or generate time-stamped chapters for YouTube videos.
Gemini Nano is designed to enhance Chrome’s security protections by detecting phishing sites and fake virus alert pages, and it can learn a user’s permission preferences to suppress unlikely requests, while assisting with automatic password updates for platforms such as Coursera, Duolingo and Spotify. The rollout will occur in stages over several days, with additional agentic capabilities planned for the coming months, and a direct AI Mode shortcut now embedded into Chrome’s address bar.
