Critical Rust Coreutils Bug Blocks Automatic Updates on Ubuntu 25.10
According to Canonical, a flaw has been discovered in the Rust-based version of uutils bundled with Ubuntu 25.10, and the bug blocks the system from automatically applying available software updates. The issue affects cloud deployments, container images, as well as desktop and server editions of Ubuntu. To check if a system is impacted, users can run the command dpkg -l rust-coreutils; systems on version 0.2.2-0ubuntu2.1 or later are unaffected, while earlier versions remain vulnerable.
To resolve the problem, updates can be triggered manually via the apt command or other mirrors, for example by running sudo apt install --update rust-coreutils, after which automatic update checks and applications resume. The Rust-based component is part of Ubuntu’s broader initiative to oxidise the distribution—an effort introduced with version 25.10 that replaces traditional GNU utilities with uutils and sudo-rs, with the aim of supporting the upcoming Long-Term Support release due in April 2026.
