Over 12% of Military Apps Contain Foreign Code Raising Data Risks

A study found that over 12% of mobile apps targeted at US military personnel contain code from companies in China, Russia, or other foreign nations, raising data security concerns. Researchers examined over 220 apps, revealing that many incorporate third-party software components that can track user behavior, including location. The study highlighted that 40% of apps shared more data than disclosed, with a significant portion having threads traced back to adversarial countries.

Most military-affiliated users expressed discomfort with these apps, particularly those with foreign code, yet they lack clear information on app data practices. Proposed solutions include in-phone alerts about foreign code and stricter regulations on data practices regarding military personnel.
