Coupang to Issue $1.17 Billion in Vouchers Over Data Breach

According to SecurityWeek, Coupang has announced plans to spend 1.685 trillion won (roughly $1.17 billion) in compensation over a recent data breach affecting 33.7 million customer accounts in Korea. The incident was reportedly discovered on 18 November, with unauthorized access via overseas servers, and Coupang says the data breach began on 24 June 2025.

Starting 15 January 2026, the company will issue one-time purchase vouchers worth 50,000 won to each of the impacted customers, with the total compensation exceeding $1.174 billion. The announcement states that both wow members and general members will receive the same treatment, including customers who had withdrawn from Coupang but were notified of the leak.

Coupang’s interim CEO Harold Rogers is quoted emphasising customer-centricity and restoration of trust, while founder Kim Bum-seok said the stolen data were recovered and that the intruder’s storage devices were seized. Written by Ionut Arghire for SecurityWeek, the article notes the plan targets the 33.7 million customers who received a personal information leakage notice.
