Prosper Data Breach Impacts 17.6 Million Accounts

SecurityWeek reports that Prosper suffered a data breach likely affecting 17.6 million accounts, with attackers querying Prosper’s database to exfiltrate confidential, proprietary, and personal information, though there is no evidence of unauthorized access to customer accounts. The exposed data includes names, addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, Social Security numbers, government IDs and other information, according to Have I Been Pwned.

Prosper noted that while it has contained the incident and observed no unauthorized activity since 2 September, law enforcement has been notified and the company is still investigating to determine exactly what data was affected. The breach prompted Prosper to consider offering free credit monitoring after determining the scope of the data. Have I Been Pwned has added the stolen information to its database to help individuals check if they have been affected.

Prosper emphasised that customer-facing operations continued uninterrupted and that it maintains safeguards to protect customers’ funds as investigations continue.
