In Other News: WhatsApp Passkey-Encrypted Backups, Russia Targets Meduza Malware, New Mastercard Solution

WhatsApp has announced that on both Android and iOS devices users can now encrypt chat backups using passkeys, with a lockscreen code, face, or fingerprint replacing the need to memorise a password or encryption key. The feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks and months. In Russia, authorities have arrested several individuals accused of developing and distributing the Meduza malware, which is designed to steal credentials, cryptocurrency wallets, and other information from compromised systems.

Security firm Recorded Future has previously reported that Russian cybercriminals are now being managed by the state, and Mastercard has responded by launching a threat intelligence solution following its acquisition of Recorded Future. The Mastercard solution includes detection of fraudulent payment card test transactions, digital skimmer impact assessments, and disruption of card-related malware, and it also provides merchant and payment ecosystem threat intelligence.
