European Commission probes cyberattack on mobile device management system

THE European Commission is investigating a cyberattack on its mobile device management platform after detecting intrusion traces, with signs that staff names and mobile numbers may have been accessed. On 30 January, the central infrastructure managing mobile devices identified traces of a cyber-attack, though no mobile devices were compromised and the system was cleaned within nine hours.

The European Commission continues to monitor security, strengthen cybersecurity, and review the incident to improve protections, as part of its response to ongoing threats to critical EU services and institutions. According to Bloomberg, an EU official said the incident was more severe than typical hits, and the staff had recently been warned of a phishing campaign against EU representatives.

The European Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-EU) is investigating the security breach, while attackers could use the stolen data to launch targeted vishing and phishing attacks to steal credentials. The incident underscores GDPR concerns and potential reputational damage to the EU’s cyber credibility.
