Google has signalled its plan to merge Android and ChromeOS into a single, versatile operating system, with Aluminum OS identified as the internal codename for the desktop Android iteration. According to 9to5google, a Google engineer inadvertently disclosed the desktop interface via a bug report on the Chromium issue tracker, the report now restricted but providing the first official visual evidence in the form of screenshots and video.

The leaked media show a build labelled ZL1A.260119.001.A1, running Android 16 on an HP Chromebook powered by Intel’s 12th-generation Alder Lake-U architecture, with the abbreviated codename ALOS (Aluminum OS). The interface features a prominent top bar, a desktop-optimised status area, and icons for Google Gemini and screen recording, suggesting potential AI integration and native support for browser extensions within the Chrome browser.

The article also notes native split-screen multitasking and a claimed direct migration path from Chromebook devices to ALOS, with broad compatibility across ARM and x86 architectures anticipated.
