6 Browser-Based Attacks Security Teams Need to Prepare For Right Now
Browser-based attacks have surged as criminals target users where they log in to business apps, with the browser now the common battleground for credential theft, session hijacking and data exfiltration, according to The Hacker News.
The piece outlines six key techniques security teams should know: phishing for credentials and sessions remains the most direct route, now often delivered across multiple channels and using MFA-bypassing kits; malicious copy-and-paste attacks known as ClickFix or FileFix trick users into running code via the browser; malicious OAuth integrations (consent phishing) that bypass
normal login flows, including a Salesforce example where an attacker gained access by authorising a malicious OAuth app; malicious browser extensions that capture logins and steal cookies; malicious file delivery using HTML Applications and even SVGs to host stealthy phishing pages; and finally, stolen credentials and MFA gaps, which can enable account takeovers even when some
protection is in place. The report notes that Salesforce breaches and other high-profile incidents illustrate how attackers exploit these browser-based vectors to access cloud services. It also highlights that security platforms, like Push Security’s browser-based detection and response capabilities, are being promoted to help detect and block these attacks in real time.
