Google Drive Desktop Gets AI-Powered Ransomware Detection to Block Cyberattacks

Google Drive desktop now includes an AI-powered ransomware detection system that automatically halts file synchronization when malicious encryption attempts are detected, aiming to prevent widespread data corruption across enterprise networks. The feature creates a “protective bubble” around user files by stopping cloud syncing and guiding file restoration, with desktop and email notifications issued when ransomware is detected.

Drive for desktop, available on Windows and macOS, uses a specialised AI model trained on millions of real-world ransomware samples and continuously adapts to new variants with threat intelligence from VirusTotal, according to VirusTotal. The system identifies ransomware’s core behavioural signature—mass file encryption or corruption attempts—and pauses synchronization of affected files to contain damage within an organisation’s cloud storage.

Administrators can oversee activity via the Admin console, receiving detailed alerts and audit trails, while the feature is enabled by default for all customers, though detection and restoration controls can be managed as needed. The rollout marks a shift from purely reactive antivirus approaches to proactive business-continuity protections, as outlined in GBHackers On Security on 2 October 2025.
