Google & Samsung Launch Galaxy XR: The $1,800 AI Headset to Battle Vision Pro

Google has officially confirmed the Galaxy XR, an Android extended reality headset developed with Samsung and Qualcomm under the codename Project Moohan, and it is now available in the United States and South Korea for $1,800 USD. The device is powered by a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and uses Micro OLED panels with a total of 29 million pixels at a 3552 × 3840 resolution, delivering a 96% DCI-P3 colour gamut.

It weighs 545 grams including the forehead cushion, lighter than the Vision Pro's 750 grams, and features dual high-resolution passthrough cameras, six external tracking cameras and two eye-tracking sensors, with iris recognition for authentication.

For power, an external battery pack weighing around 302 grams provides about two hours of general use or up to 2.5 hours of video playback, comparable to the Vision Pro’s battery life with the M5 processor, and the controller plus travel case are sold separately at $250 each. According to Sameer Samat, President of the Google Android Ecosystem, Android XR is the first Android platform designed around Gemini, Google’s generative AI framework, with Gemini integrated into core apps such as Maps, Photos and YouTube.

To encourage early adoption, Samsung noted that customers purchasing the Galaxy XR before the end of the year will receive a complimentary “Explorer Pack” including a year of Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium and Google Play Pass, plus additional streaming passes.
