Drones to Diplomas: How Russia’s Largest Private University is Linked to a $25M Essay Mill
Dreary links between academic cheating networks and Russia’s private education sector are laid bare in Krebs on Security’s Drones to Diplomas, which notes a sprawling operation that has generated nearly $25 million in revenue and now markets itself as an AI company while tying itself to Russia’s largest private university.
The investigation traces the Nerdify and other Nerdy-brand sites through a web of Cypriot, Maltese and Hong Kong entities, with UK addresses connected to Olekszij Pokatilo and Oleksandr Korsukov, and the group repeatedly rebranding to dodge Google Ads suspensions.
It identifies Livingston Research as a long-running paper-mill in which Korsukov and Pokatilo were involved, and shows Synergy University—described by Krebs as Russia’s largest private educational provider—giving rise to familiar players such as Filip Perkon and Vadim Lobov, who have overlapping business and cultural ties in the UK and abroad.
The piece also highlights allegations that Synergy’s footprint extends into drone development and other ventures linked to the Russian war in Ukraine, including references to a bpla.s****ynergy[.]bot site claiming involvement in combat drones. According to This Isn’t Fine, a Substack account, the Nerdify operation has shifted to offering AI-enabled assignment assistance, while still routing work through a network of fronts that regularly changes domain names and front persons.
