US law firm with major political clients hacked in spying spree linked to China
According to CNN, on 8 October 2025 suspected Chinese government-backed hackers breached the computer systems of U.S. law firm Williams & Connolly, which has represented several of America’s most powerful politicians, as part of a broader spying campaign against multiple law firms. The intrusions targeted email accounts of select attorneys, with the attackers using a previously unknown software flaw that allowed stealthy access to the firm’s network.
The firm’s letter to clients, reviewed by CNN, notes that while it did not name the hackers, a source familiar with the hack identified Beijing as the prime suspect. The letter also suggests there is no reason to believe the data will be disclosed or used publicly, implying the intruder’s aims are espionage rather than extortion. This reporting frames the incident as part of Beijing’s wider intelligence-gathering efforts in its competition with the United States on national security and trade issues.
