No, Google did not warn 2.5 billion Gmail users to reset passwords

According to Google, rumours that it warned 2.5 billion Gmail users to reset passwords are false. The company explained in a Monday blog post that Gmail’s protections are strong and effective, and that claims of a major Gmail security warning are inaccurate. It noted that several inaccurate claims had circulated, alleging a broad warning to all Gmail users about a major security issue.

Google added that over 99.9% of phishing and malware attacks are blocked by Gmail’s security defenses and suggested users switch to passkeys to keep accounts secure even if credentials are stolen. This clarification comes amid broader media coverage of security stories that Google says were not verified, including references to Workspace accounts being affected in a data breach. 2 September 2025.
