Your Meta AI conversations may come back as ads in your feed

Meta has announced that conversations with its AI assistant will be used for targeted advertising across its apps, meaning questions asked or topics discussed could later trigger related ads in feeds. Meta AI sits within Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, and can answer questions, generate text or images, and suggest content.

Users will be notified from 7 October 2025 via in‑product notices and emails, with the update taking effect on 16 December 2025, and the changes will apply to those interactions unless they are in exempt regions. According to Meta, more than 1 billion people use its AI every month, and the company argues that targeted ads generate more revenue than generic ones. The Register notes that users in the EU, UK, and South Korea are exempt from these changes due to stricter privacy laws.
