MICROSOFT has discovered GigaWiper, a new type of Go-based backdoor that merges functionalities from three existing malware families. This sophisticated malware incorporates espionage features, remote control, and various destructive wiping capabilities. GigaWiper can execute up to 20 diverse commands, including severe data destruction tactics like low-level disk wiping, file encryption with no recovery options, and triggering system crashes.
The malware operates stealthily, allowing attackers to alternate between surveillance and destructive actions without deploying new tools. The research emphasizes a shift in wiper malware towards operational efficiency and flexibility, necessitating enhanced cybersecurity measures to block known command-and-control infrastructure.
