AI-driven scams are preying on Gen Z’s digital lives

According to Malwarebytes Labs, AI-driven scams are increasingly targeting Gen Z and Millennials, who account for two in three extortion victims. The firm’s latest research finds that one in three mobile users has been targeted by an extortion scam, with nearly one in five having fallen victim. Gen Z is hit hardest, with 58% of targets and 28% of victims, and sextortion remains a notable risk, with one in six mobile users targeted and Gen Z’s rate rising to 38%.

The research also notes that AI-enhanced scams are widening exposure, with 45% of Gen Z users hit by AI scams (vs 31% overall) and iPhone users at 62% (vs 51% overall), while 81% of data sharers report exposure to these threats. The report highlights cross‑channel exposure and behavioural risk, as mobile-first users frequent platforms where identity checks are lighter, making it easier for scammers to exploit personal information, images, or even voice.

It emphasises practical steps, including security software, strong passwords, and the STOP framework, to cut the risk of falling for these evolving scams.
