A report from the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) reveals that in the first half of 2026, there were 1,029 data breaches resulting in 471 million breach notices. A major incident involving Instructure's Canvas platform was responsible for 275 million notices, making up about 58% of the total. The ITRC's report highlights a rise in insider threats, decreased transparency, and increased zero-day attacks.
It also notes that there were 87 compromises in the government sector, 31 in transportation, and 27 among utility companies, resembling figures from the previous year.
