IN 2016, the Panama Papers leak exposed significant compliance failures by financial institutions, including Swedbank. Following the leak, the New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) conducted investigations and issued two information requests to Swedbank regarding its connections to the Mossack Fonseca law firm. Swedbank was found to have withheld crucial information about its operations and relationships, including its Baltic subsidiaries and customers involved in the leak.
As a result, the DFS imposed a $50 million penalty on Swedbank for its lack of cooperation and violation of New York Banking Law. Acting Superintendent Kaitlin Asrow emphasized the obligation of financial institutions to comply with laws and regulations to maintain the integrity of the financial system.
