CTEM's Core: Prioritization and Validation
CTEM, or Continuous Threat Exposure Management, reframes vulnerability handling by emphasising prioritisation of exposures by real business impact and validating them in your own environment, rather than chasing every alert. The piece notes that more than 40,000 CVEs are recorded each year and that CVSS and EPSS label 61% of them as critical, a situation it calls panic at scale rather than true risk.
In practice, only around 10% of real-world vulnerabilities are truly critical, meaning about 84% of so-called critical alerts are false urgency and wastes of time. Gartner is cited as predicting that by 2028 more than half of exposures will stem from nontechnical weaknesses such as misconfigured SaaS, leaked credentials and human error, which CTEM aims to address through the prioritise-then-validate approach.
The article also highlights Adversarial Exposure Validation technologies, including Breach and Attack Simulation and Automated Penetration Testing, which together provide the attacker’s perspective at scale and help prove what actually matters in a given environment, not just what appears dangerous.
