Meta to Invest $1.5 Billion in Massive 1-Gigawatt Texas Data Center for Next-Gen AI Infrastructure
Meta has announced plans to invest over $1.5 billion in the construction of a 1-gigawatt data centre in El Paso, Texas, to power its next-generation AI infrastructure and is slated to become operational in 2028. The project is described as a significant step in expanding Meta’s AI capabilities, with the facility designed to provide the computing power required for high-performance AI initiatives powered by advanced chips.
The Texas investment comes as Meta competes with rivals such as OpenAI and Alphabet to scale their computing resources. Earlier this year, Meta launched a Louisiana data centre project codenamed “Hyperion,” with statements by U.S.
President Donald Trump suggesting the initiative could involve an investment of up to $50 billion, and Meta has already secured $29 billion in financing from Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO) and Blue Owl Capital to support its expansion; Meta is also building another gigawatt-scale facility in Ohio named “Prometheus.” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasised that personal AI assistants could become one of the most important services, a stance the company says justifies its bold investment strategy.
