A recent AI-assisted investigation has revealed a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Linux kernel, specifically in the net/sched component. Identified as CVE-2026-53264, the flaw allows unprivileged users to gain root access through a race condition caused by improper locking mechanisms. The researcher, Lee Jia Jie from STAR Labs, discovered the issue during his internship, which has existed for two to three years.
AI played a significant role in identifying the bug, improving the exploit's reliability, and hastening the process of triggering the vulnerability. Following its discovery, a patch was released to fix the issue, urging Linux users to update their systems via security channels.
