IN July 2026, a coordinated cyberattack targeted over 30 water utilities in Minnesota, briefly disrupting operations at one plant in Braham. Minnesota IT Services activated its cybersecurity response immediately, with assistance from federal and local agencies. While Braham's plant went offline, it was restored within two hours. Other utilities managed to keep operations running through backup procedures, and no indication was found that drinking water safety was compromised.
The ongoing investigation has not attributed the attack but coincided with recent warnings about Iranian-affiliated hackers targeting similar infrastructures.
