FORMER ransomware negotiator Angelo Martino has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for conspiring with the BlackCat ransomware gang. While representing victims in ransom negotiations, he shared confidential strategies and victim details with the attackers, effectively acting as a 'double agent'. Martino's actions helped BlackCat demand higher ransom amounts, resulting in a substantial financial loss for the victims. Prosecutors described the harm caused to businesses and the implications of Martino's betrayal.
Alongside two other cybersecurity professionals, Martino participated in extorting multiple victims, resulting in significant financial gains for the group, which were later seized by law enforcement.
