AN apparent Nitrogen ransomware attack on Foxconn’s North American facilities has highlighted manufacturing’s cyber crisis, with the incident described as one of 600 hits on manufacturers this year. Foxconn admitted that a cyberattack affected operations at some North American sites, but stopped short of calling it a ransomware incident and did not disclose the breach’s scope or impact; a malicious actor was confirmed to be behind the incident.

Earlier this week, Nitrogen claimed credit on its leak site, according to Hackmanac, and said it exfiltrated more than 11 million files amounting to around 8TB of data, including confidential instructions, internal project documentation and technical drawings. The stolen materials reportedly reference confidential documentation from a number of major tech firms, and Hackmanac notes that Foxconn’s data could involve financial records and engineering schematics.

Rebecca Moody of Comparitech described manufacturers as high‑value targets for ransomware, and Ismael Valenzuela of Arctic Wolf noted that Nitrogen’s approach here differs from its usual focus on smaller firms, reflecting the broader risk to supply chains. May 14, 2026.
