Android Streamlines Passkey Transfers Between Password Managers

Android Password Manager Migration is being rolled out to simplify moving passkeys and other credentials between Android password managers. The article explains that Google has developed a migration workflow designed to reduce the friction users face when switching from one manager to another, with a particular focus on passkeys, which are often the hardest part of a transfer.

The feature is built on the FIDO Credential Exchange Format, providing a standardised means for secure data transfer between apps while limiting exposure of raw credentials.

The process starts when a user chooses to import or copy credentials. The Android system automatically detects other password managers installed on the device, and the user selects a source and a destination. The transfer then redirects to the original manager for review and explicit authorisation. After the user approves, the data is exported and the two apps complete the exchange via the Android credential interface.

The article states this approach helps migrate not just usernames and passwords but a broad set of data, including passkeys, addresses, API keys, and even secure banking information, though the exact transferable fields depend on each app’s capabilities. It emphasises that, because the transfer uses the FIDO format, raw credentials are not exposed to the OS or other apps.

Initial support covers Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane, with caveats that users must update to the latest versions and that compatibility may vary for items such as secure notes or banking details. Availability spans Android 8 and later, subject to Google Play Services presence, device OEM customisations, and regional policies. 11 September 2026.
