ON June 16, it was reported that the Iran-linked hacking group Handala attacked Cal Water, although there was no evidence of water supply tampering. Handala subsequently warned of increased attacks on U.S. critical infrastructure, specifically targeting operational technology and programmable logic controllers (PLCs). On July 23, WANA News reported Handala's declaration focusing on U.S. infrastructure, including water, electricity, and transportation sectors.
Following this, four water utilities in Minnesota were attacked, with suspicions of Handala's involvement, although no group has officially claimed responsibility. There is currently no evidence of water quality tampering.
