THE Linux Foundation has launched a new initiative called Akrites, aimed at improving the security of open source software (OSS) by establishing a shared Security Incident Response Team (SIRT). This effort focuses on the efficient discovery, patching, and disclosure of OSS vulnerabilities, addressing the need for faster responses to security threats exacerbated by AI technologies.

Akrites, supported by major tech companies, seeks to create a confidential framework for vulnerability reporting and coordination, ensuring that fixes are deployed before they can be exploited. The project is part of a wider movement in the industry, following a similar initiative by Chainguard known as Athena.
