Google’s Gemini Desktop App Challenges Microsoft Copilot on Windows

Google has released a native Gemini desktop app for Windows 10 and Windows 11, following the earlier macOS appearance, enabling Google’s AI assistant to run outside a browser tab and compete more directly with Microsoft Copilot at the desktop level. The Windows edition emphasises a lightweight, background-friendly design and a global shortcut, Alt + Space, to summon a floating Gemini window without interrupting the user’s current task.

The article notes that Google positions the app as a seamless addition to a Windows workflow, designed to be unobtrusive in terms of memory use and performance.

The Gemini Windows client strengthens integration with Google’s ecosystem. It can read and process content from Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Calendar, enabling commands such as summarising emails or locating Drive notes without manual copy-paste. It also introduces Gemini Spark for multi-step, long-running background tasks and includes native multimedia generation features, with a Nano Banana image engine and the Gemini Omni video tool for generating visuals directly within the desktop environment.

Google describes the app as a standalone client that binds closely to Workspace and AI capabilities, signalling an intent to extend desktop AI capabilities beyond the browser and deeper into Google’s services on Windows. The app is publicly available worldwide at gemini[.]google/desktop, with further discussion about its future potential, including real-time on-screen visual reasoning, noted as points to watch.
