The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added two PHP2Shell flaws to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog after confirming active exploitation of the issues. The vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, are rated 9.2 on the CVSS scale and allow unauthenticated remote code execution on affected PHP deployments.
Adel Karimi, Perplexity’s detection and response lead, said that researchers observed successful RCE against honeypot systems on 24 October 2026, with a concrete payload including a decoded cookie dump and a function address derived from that data appearing in the execution flow.
PHP Foundation notes that the flaws have been patched in PHP builds 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35, released on 21 October 2026. Agencies have until 29 October 2026 to apply fixes. The vulnerability remains widespread: Censys estimates more than 32.51 million PHP services are still running affected versions, and PHP powers roughly 70% of websites on the internet.
The discovery and KEV listing follow multiple advisories and wide vendor engagement as the community responds to the severity of PHP2Shell-exploitation activity. Evidence presented by Karimi indicates a definitive exploitation chain beyond crashes, with an 800 KiB decoded cookie dump linked to the later payload, underscoring the need for prompt patching and thorough remediation of affected systems.
The report attributes the confirmation and observed exploitation to Karimi and to CISA’s KEV update, and notes the broader industry advisories mobilised in response.
