Binance reported the largest known crypto theft, with about $6.3 billion taken from the exchange. In an update on 30 October 2026, Binance said attackers may have used a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The company stressed that there is no evidence of any wallet private keys being leaked, and noted that the incident involved a more complex process than a single “one-click” action.
Binance has frozen around $3 billion on-chain with help from blockchain partners, and is promising to cover all losses using its emergency fund and company funds. The theft is being linked by blockchain researchers to TraderTraitor, a North Korean group associated with previous cryptocurrency heists, with initial estimates from TRM Labs and Chainalysis suggesting about $6.36 billion exited Binance wallets across ten blockchains, most of it moving within roughly 20 minutes.
The firm’s disclosures indicate multiple breach points beyond the initially suspected DevOps access. Reuters and other outlets have reported that Binance[.]US was not affected, and that the total on-chain freeze figures vary among analysts. For users, Binance urged them to monitor official updates and account activity, use official channels for any incident-related communications, and be wary of scams promising recovery services or urgent verifications.
The article notes that some users should preserve evidence if they encounter related scams and to report unusual activity through Binance’s official support.
