The FBI has attributed the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets to TraderTraitor, a North Korea-aligned elite hacking group also known as Jade Sleet, Pressure Chollima, PUKCHONG, Slow Pisces and UNC4899. In a joint statement with the US Secret Service and IRS-CI, the agencies said the group converted substantial portions of the stolen assets into Ethereum and indicated continued laundering activity through DeFi and instant-swap services as part of ongoing stages of the operation.
The FBI also published a list of wallet addresses allegedly used by the attackers to launder funds. Binance reported that withdrawals resumed in phase one after pausing deliveries in the wake of the incident, with deposits remaining open.
The attack is described as the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, surpassing the $1.46 billion Bybit incident from February 2025 and affecting funds across 11 blockchains, 82% of which were on Ethereum and Bitcoin. Elliptic is cited as noting that the North Korea-linked regime has stolen over $6.5 billion in crypto assets in recent years. Of TraderTraitor’s $6.43 billion haul, about $2.85 billion has been frozen on-chain by entities including Tether, Circle, Ripple, Arbitrum and Optimism.
The group is said to have a history of crypto-focused thefts and to employ social-engineering pretexts—such as job-themed recruitment lures—and trojanized software (for example, Terraform-based tooling) to deliver malware across macOS, Linux, and Windows, with AI-assisted lures highlighted by Microsoft as part of its tradecraft. The FBI’s attribution follows analyses and statements from multiple security researchers and industry observers.
