The FBI has named North Korea as responsible for the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets from Binance around 29 October 2026, attributing the activity to the North Korea–linked TraderTraitor group, also known as Lazarus Group and APT38. The agency published a public alert and said TraderTraitor actors primarily converted stolen funds into Ethereum, with laundering expected via DeFi and instant swap services as part of follow-on stages.
Binance has not identified a culprit, but blockchain analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have supported the attribution, with TRM stating it has high confidence in TraderTraitor as the attacker.
Evidence and impact details circulated by the FBI, US Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation describe how attackers used an engineer’s laptop to reach a service container and issue unauthorised withdrawal requests.
TRM reported that about $6.36 billion was moved out of Binance wallets on ten blockchains in roughly 20 minutes from 20:05 UTC on 29 October, making it the largest crypto theft on record; approximately $2.67 billion in stablecoins were frozen by Tether, Circle, Ripple and World Liberty Financial, with additional freezes on Arbitrum by its Security Council, and attempts to block further movement noted by the authorities.
The attackers reportedly accelerated movement by selling USDT to market makers and borrowing ETH against USDT on Aave, and ultimately held substantial balances including more than 420,000 ETH and 18,270 BTC, beyond issuer reach. The FBI urges THORChain RPC nodes, instant exchanges and other crypto firms to block transactions involving the implicated addresses or that are derived from them.
