The FBI has formally attributed the record Binance cryptocurrency heist to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group, with officials urging the crypto industry to help prevents the stolen funds from being laundered. The attack occurred on 29 October, when hackers emptied Binance hot wallets across multiple blockchains and moved most of the proceeds within about 20 minutes. Binance values the loss at roughly $6.3 billion, making it the largest reported crypto theft to date.
Within hours, blockchain analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis linked the operation to TraderTraitor. Binance initially speculated that a DevOps engineer’s compromised laptop could have started the intrusion and committed to covering losses. The FBI’s attribution, released on 31 October, notes that TraderTraitor actors have been converting stolen assets predominantly into Ethereum (ETH) and predicts continued laundering via DeFi and instant swap services as the operation evolves. The alert identifies 608 Ethereum addresses, 19 Bitcoin addresses and one Solana address that currently hold or previously held proceeds from the theft.
The FBI, working with the US Secret Service and IRS-CI, has called on THORChain node operators, RPC node operators, instant exchanges, DeFi services and blockchain analytics firms to refuse transactions linked to these addresses. Binance has since said the incident involved more than a single compromised device and described the attack as complex, with a self-destruct mechanism that erased tooling and evidence.
It began restoring withdrawals on 1 November, starting with Bitcoin, reporting about $4.6 billion in withdrawals and $1 billion in deposits processed by mid-morning. Elliptic estimates the total at $6.43 billion across 11 chains, with around $2.85 billion confirmed as frozen or seized; the attacker is alleged to control roughly $3.25 billion in assets across more than 800 addresses, including large ETH, BTC and XRP holdings, and the laundering is described as automated, potentially spanning months.
