The FBI attributes the Binance crypto exchange breach last week to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group, also known as Jade Sleet, UNC4899 and Slow Pisces. In a brief statement published on 31 October, the Bureau said TraderTraitor actors have been converting stolen assets primarily into Ethereum (ETH) and that these assets are expected to be laundered further via decentralised finance products and instant swap services as part of ongoing laundering stages.
The FBI, along with the US Secret Service and IRS-CI, urged crypto entities to block transactions linked to addresses used by TraderTraitor to launder the stolen funds.
Industry analytics firm Elliptic reports that around $2.9bn of the funds have been frozen or seized, leaving almost $3.3bn outside the reach of issuers. At current prices, the attacker is estimated to control about $3.25bn across more than 800 addresses, including around 584,000 ETH ($1.32bn), 18,327 BTC ($1.42bn) and 233 million XRP. The ETH includes TRX laundered through bridges, arriving on Ethereum and being split across hundreds of new wallets; most of the stolen TRX has now been laundered. XRP, SOL and NEAR worth about $439m have not moved since the theft, according to Elliptic.
Binance says it will cover incident costs and that customer funds are not in danger, continuing to investigate the breach. The firm initially suggested a compromised DevOps laptop as the source, later noting additional breach points in a “complex attack” carried out by more than one individual, featuring a self-destruct mechanism that destroyed tooling and traces.
TraderTraitor has ties to the Lazarus Group, APT 38 and AppleJeus, with a history of attacks on DMM, Alphapo, CoinsPaid, Atomic Wallet and the Bybit breach.
