Several missiles were launched toward the sea by North Korea on Wednesday, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, which said the launches targeted North Korea’s eastern waters and are under analysis by South Korean and U.S. authorities.

The report notes Pyongyang had earlier criticised U.S. claims that North Korean hackers were behind the Binance cryptocurrency heist, with Kim Yo Jong describing the FBI statement as a “trite provocation” and stating there is no need to meet face to face with what she called hostile actors.

The Binance hack, described by Binance as over $6 billion stolen in what security researchers say would be the largest cryptocurrency heist on record, has been attributed by the FBI to North Korean actors known as TraderTraitor, who were previously tied to a separate $1.5 billion Bybit breach.

Kim Yo Jong’s comments came as North Korea’s state media reported a warship under construction at Nampho Shipyard and as tensions between the Koreas rose following mine incidents near the border in September, which Seoul says North Korea planted. Pyongyang warned of possible retaliation if provoked and signalled a return to propaganda broadcasts and deployment of new weapons along the border.

The launches and statements follow Pyongyang’s insistence that Washington drop what it terms hostile policies to restore diplomatic ties between the United States and North Korea.
