Binance has disclosed that the hackers who allegedly stole billions of dollars in cryptocurrency spent months planning the heist, employing social engineering alongside novel malware and other techniques. The company, with the FBI and TRM Security attributing the attack to North Korean actors, said the initial target was about $6.34 billion in crypto from Binance wallets, of which $2.85 billion has since been frozen or intercepted. Binance has set aside funds to cover the losses and points to a Proof of Reserves page for transparency.
The investigation describes a multi-stage campaign beginning no later than June. The first incident involved an engineer downloading a tampered version of Homebrew. In September, a legitimate job hunting platform delivered messages from someone posing as a project director, leading to a two-step interview process and a malicious assignment that installed 0-day malware on the engineer’s device.
The attackers used obfuscation and evasion techniques, including replacing a legitimate component with a malicious version and establishing attacker‑controlled communications. In October, the compromise spread to two additional engineers, with one wallet granting access to a container deployment.
On 20 October, the attackers used the compromised machine and an internal AI tool to seize more devices, and nine days later they moved assets via an on‑chain signing service, exploiting Ethereum’s EIP-7702 to grant partial execution rights to a malicious contract. Binance halted withdrawals and coordinated freezes, but on-chain authorisations required additional actions to revoke. TRM Security attributes laundering activity to TraderTraitor.
